An Exposure of the Visit
of Slum Disabled Children undertaken by RSSO on The 14th of
December,2008

On 14th Dec. 2008 a group of 25 Slum
Disabled Children were taken to the Nandankanan Zoo for an outing.
Ms. Anneke Claeys a Volunteer from
Belgium, a few parents and 3 RSSO staff accompanied the children.
It is often noticed that the disabled
children are neglected and deprived of their basic social,
educational and cultural rights due to their impairments and
handicaps.
As Ruchika runs a program “Inclusive
Education” and working on Inclusion for the disabled slum children,
an effort was made to bring them to the lime light of the society,
outside their scanty huts and to show them to the external world.
The objective of the visit was to
increase the awareness of disabled children about the animals and
birds. A bus was provided by the Ruchika High School and the
children were collected from different slums and taken to the Zoo.

Diagnosis and Assessment Camp
for the Visually Impaired Children
Inclusive Education Program, RSSO |
|
Most
of the children from the slum and rural communities belong to poorer
family backgrounds and experience visual impairment due to disease
and malnutrition.
Many children are infected by
water-borne parasites resulting in very serious eye infections many
leading to blindness. All these can be treated effectively if they
are diagnosed earlier.
On January 6th, 2009 a diagnosis and
assessment camp for the visually impaired slum children was
organized by the Inclusive Education project in the premises of the
Ruchika Social Service Organisation.
About
24 visually impaired children from the slums were examined and
assessed in the camp. Dr. Renuka Mohanty an ophthalmologist of Lions
Eye Hospital diagnosed the children and prescribed treatment and
medicines. Mr. J. Adhikari an optometrist assessed the visual acuity
of the children.
It is apparent from the diagnosis that
most of the children are suffering from Keratomycosis, Keratoconus
and corneal infections because of which they have lost their vision.
The parents have also been explained about the prognosis of the
patient, who have no treatment except cornea transplantation and it
is very expensive and impossible in the present situation.
According
to the doctors prescription the parents were explained to take care
of the eyes and save the remaining visual capacity so that the
condition of the children will not be deteriorated in future.
Medicines were purchased and provided to the children for one month
from Dr. Herman Kuppers a medical specialist from Belgium heading
the Inclusive Education project support.
