The Annual Sports Day for the "differently-abled" children and adolescents residing in the slums and streets of Bhubaneswar was organized at the playground in front of 35 Forest Park by the RSSO on December 23, 2006. To Read all about the Annual Sports Day of the "Inclusive Education Program

We had seven visitors from Nevada City, California USA, who visited the organization and interacted with the children.

Among them were...

Debbie Pennington from USA, who is funding the Shradha Bhawan (A Short Stay Home for Women and Girls) along with Swami Prangyananda Ji, founder of “Kriya Yoga” visited the organization and met with the girls and women of the girl shelter.

Breda Gahan, International advisor for HIV / AIDS of Concern World Wide visited the organization and was very appreciative of the work being done.

Dr Emma Packard, a pediatrician and wife of Mathew Packard Director Concern Worldwide from Ireland, is visiting both shelters and conducting a health check up of the children.

Stolen Childhood a film on child labor across the world made by Robin Romano of Romano Productions which features Ruchika Platform School along with other programs for child labor was shown on the evening of 2nd December at the U.N. to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the CRC.

 
Program Anjali:

(Inclusive Education)
10 disabled children participated in 5 day Inclusion program, which concluded on 14th November Children’s Day organized by Swabhiman, an organization which stands for advocacy and awareness for the differently disabled children. The children took part in various workshops and cultural activities.

 

Ruchika's latest innovation is a new approach to schooling for all i.e. school on wheels. A mobile trolley decorated with posters, charts, maps and equipped with all necessary teaching and educational materials reaches  the children   working on the pavements. The teacher pedals  the trolley  school from one place to another.

 

To combat the lack of sanitation and  potable water facilities Ruchika has started construction of child friendly latrines, water harvesting and tube wells in 60 slums of Bhubaneswar with assistance from Water Aid India.

 

Rain Water Harvesting:
In one of the slums, Rain Water Harvesting Point was inaugurated by Ms. Padma Agarwal District Chairperson of the Inner Wheel Club of Rotary, Bhubaneswar. She was accompanied by other members of the club.

 

Art Competition:

(Water Aid India)
An art competition was conducted in 30 alternative school centers. The children were told to paint on the topic of “WATER”.

Awareness Rally ( Water Aid Project)
A rally was held on 22nd November by the alternative school children to create awareness among the slum community of Dumuduma area on potable water, proper sanitation and hygiene. More than 270 children participated, shouting slogans and distributing leaflets.
 

Operation Healthy Platforms is a targeted intervention programme to prevent HIV/AIDS/STI  among adolescent children.

 

World AIDS Day
December 1st. was celebrated as World AIDs Day. A rally was organized to make Orissa free of HIV /AIDS. Auto rickshaw drivers were motivated to carry messages on the issue through stickers, brochures and leaflets. Sri Jay Narayan Mishra , Minister of Transport, Govt. of Orissa inaugurated this function.
